Exploration: Serpent Mound

I knew very little about Ohio when I moved here from Rhode Island: the Cleveland Indians, Cincinnati Reds, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and Serpent Mound.

Serpent Mound is the largest serpent effigy mound, and if you’ve ever read anything on Moundbuilders or pre-historic archaeology, you may have come across its picture.  It’s located in Adams County, Ohio, near Peebles.

I was so excited to visit Serpent Mound, and now I am happy to share the photos with you. Enjoy!

The Serpent Mound Monument

The Observation Tower at Serpent Mound, built in 1908.

A tower like this would never be built today, and that is definitely part of its charm..

A view from the tower, towards the Serpent’s head.

A view towards the tail from the tower.

A conical mound, one of a few mounds at the site in addition to Serpent Mound.

I was so excited to visit Serpent Mound, and it was as good as I had hoped.  Getting to the top of the 25′ tower and seeing a total view of the site was a major geeking out moment.

What historic place have/had you always wanted to visit?  If you’ve been lucky enough to visit, was it what you expected?
